The ruins of the Château d'Esch-sur-Sûre are located on a spur in the small town of Esch-sur-Sûre in northwestern Luxembourg. It is naturally protected by a sharp bend of the Sûre River that surrounds the town and castle on three sides. The origins of the castle date back to 774, as evidenced by the oldest written records of the existence of the town Esch-sur-Sûre. The foundations of the castle date back to 927, when Maingaud and his wife, Hiletrude of Stavelot Abbey, purchased Esch-sur-Sûre to build a fortified castle. The castle is open to the public year-round.
Lake Haute-Sûre is the largest lake in Luxembourg and forms the heart of the natural park of the same name in the Éislek region. It also gives its name to the commune of Lac de la Haute-Sûre, which was formed in 1979. This 380-hectare lake not only provides drinking water and electricity, but also offers a superb recreation area (outside the protected area, 5 km from the main dam).
Siweschlëff translates to "seven gorges" and refers to a rocky labyrinth of crevices between sandstone towers. With a minimum width to almost 30 centimeters and a depth of up to 20 meters, the trail takes us through narrow, dark crevices. A special cool and humid microclimate has been able to form inside, so that the mosses and ferns, for which the region is known, can thrive here. The area along the Wanterbaach-Siweschlëff trail in Berdorf is one of the most impressive areas in the Luxembourg sandstone mountains.
Turelbaach is not a real castle, but an impressive building inspired by medieval castles. Hidden in a valley in the forests of Luxembourg is a holiday home that belonged to Pol Gilson, who died in 2007.
