The State's own agent checked his name against every name and phone number they had, and found no connection. So is the DNA alone enough? This is State of North Carolina v. Miguel Enrique Salguero-Olivares, the Faith Hedgepeth murder trial, in Durham County Superior Court. Faith was a 19-year-old UNC student in 2012, and her family has waited since then for this jury. The defendant is charged in her death, and he is presumed innocent. This is one reflection for Days 5 through 8: Erin Ermish and the lab's numbers, Agent Justin Heinrich of the SBI, the cookout witness, the handwriting ruling, and the defendant's own words from the booking room. Here's the part I keep coming back to. The science points at one man: a DNA profile Erin Ermish put at about 170 septillion times more likely with him, and his left palm and left thumb on the Riesling bottle. But before 2021 his name never came up, and on Day 1 the State told the jury it may not hear what set this off. So the DNA has to carry the case, and DNA is only as good as the work behind it. The swab of a stain on the bathroom door frame was lost, or never taken. The neck, shoulder and body of the Bacardi bottle were not swabbed until 2025, and he was excluded from every one of those spots. The bedding and the hair roots were not tested, and in 2013 the lab stopped taking evidence from the scene. Garbage in, garbage out. Day 8 added new pieces. A relative said the defendant gave him rides home to Faith's complex around 2009 or 2010. The man who hosted the cookout the State promised said he does not know the defendant. The judge let the jurors compare the handwriting themselves. Karena Rosario, Faith's roommate, is not charged with anything and the lab excluded her, and I still set the record side by side and ask how it was handled. Then the jury heard the defendant on the booking-room recording telling his mother he has never seen her in his life. If that DNA is good, his own words don't leave much room. As of Day 8, in that box, the State hasn't gotten me there on DNA alone. That's my opinion as one more juror who isn't sworn in. The jury's opinion is the only one that counts and we will respect it, but yours is welcome here. --- WHAT JUSTICE BREAKS DOWN 0:00 What this video is, and a preview 0:20 Video starts 1:26 Lays out the agent's answer and the one question this case turns on 8:06 Walks through what the lab found: Erin Ermish's numbers and the bottle prints 11:07 Breaks down how the evidence was handled: the lost swab, the bottle, the lab that stopped 15:10 Explains what Agent Justin Heinrich searched, and what the State said about the why 18:16 Walks through what came in new: the rides, the cookout host, the handwriting, the roommate 24:09 Weighs the defendant's own words, and whether the DNA alone is enough --- COMPLETE CASE COVERAGE justiceisaprocess.com SUBSCRIBE for daily trial coverage and hit the notification bell so you never miss testimony.
