ANOTHER CATEGORY 5? NOLO RAPIDLY INTENSIFIES!!! Polo Strikes Baja California, While Rachel Lurks

The Pacific remains extremely active, and Hurricane Nolo has become the latest major hurricane to rapidly intensify. Four hurricanes/typhoons rapidly intensified over the past six days. We had our second strongest Eastern Pacific storm on record. We're not even close to finished! Nolo strengthened dramatically south and southwest of Hawaii, developing a well-defined eye as it moved southwest of the islands. Even as the center pulls away, rough surf and lingering tropical impacts remain part of the story across Hawaii. Heavy rain could batter storm-ravaged Kauai this week as Nolo lurks west of the islands. Major Hurricane Polo, not related to Nolo, is powering towards landfall in Baja California Sur, Mexico, tonight, creating dangerous winds, flooding rain, and destructive storm surge. The storm will weaken from its peak over the weekend, but take tropical moisture northeastward into the Southwest and Four Corners, where there is a significant risk of excessive rainfall and flash flooding. That moisture then pushes into the Plains, setting the stage for a multi-day heavy rain event as we head into October. Another hurricane is expected behind Polo as Tropical Storm Rachel is set to intensify south of Mexico. Will Rachel become our next monster storm? The Nor’easter is also still impacting the Northeast, with the storm lingering near the New Jersey coast. Strong winds, high surf, coastal flooding, rip currents, and periods of heavy rain remain concerns before the system gradually weakens and pulls away this afternoon and tonight. A strong El Niño continues to provide an important backdrop to this unusually active Pacific pattern, although no individual storm can be attributed to El Niño alone.
