Kishiwada Danjiri Matsuri — 300 Years of Speed, Wood, and Nerve (Osaka, Japan)

In the streets of Kishiwada, just south of Osaka, hundreds of residents pull four-ton wooden floats called Danjiri and then throw them into 90-degree turns without slowing down. It's called Yarimawashi, and it's the heart-stopping centerpiece of a tradition that traces back over 300 years to 1703, when locals prayed for a good harvest at a shrine within Kishiwada Castle. Balancing atop the Danjiri, a man known as the Daiku-gata jumps and dances while waving fans to direct those pulling the float.
