Indigenous Maritime Enterprise and the Formation of the United States A First Thursdays Seminar with maritime historian Lincoln Paine National Maritime Historical Society For more than 14,000 years, Indigenous Americans have depended on coastal and inland waters. Yet the history of how communities adapted to, harnessed, and sustained rivers, lakes, and coastal waters across diverse environments remains little known. In this First Thursdays seminar, maritime historian Lincoln Paine explores the archaeological, archival, and oral historical record to examine the role maritime enterprise has played across the continent—from the Arctic coasts of Alaska and the Pacific Northwest to coastal California, the Mississippi watershed, the Great Lakes, the East Coast, and the Gulf Coast. Moving beyond a simple Indigenous/white binary, this cross-cultural history adds nuance to our understanding of how maritime enterprise shaped the formation of the United States. Lincoln Paine is the author of The Sea and Civilization: A Maritime History of the World and Down East: An Illustrated History of Maritime Maine. He is a visiting scholar at the Center for Oceans and Coastal Law at the University of Maine School of Law and currently serves as president of the North American Society for Oceanic History (NASOH). He is a past chair of the Maine Maritime Museum and former editor of Sea History magazine.
