Here's the verse I reference: Do you not see that God is glorified by all those in the heavens and the earth, even the birds as they soar? Each ˹instinctively˺ knows its own way of connection (salah) and glorification (tasbeeh). God has full knowledge of what they do. - Quran 24:41
Video transcript:
We think that something that WE do as human beings. But Allah is saying no, actually ALL of creation is doing salah. Not just you and me, but literally all of creation.
And when we translate salah as "connection," this verse becomes so much more meaningful. You could say, "All of creation is praying to God." But when you say, "All of creation is connecting with God, in its own way." Then to me, that makes a lot more sense.
Allah says that we don't know exactly how they "do salah" (connect), but each of them is doing it in their own way - and they know how they do it, but we don't. Even if we don't know how or see how they do it, they are doing salah. So the birds are doing salah of Allah. All the animals are doing salah of Allah. All of the trees and the mountains and all of creation is doing salah of Allah. All the animals on the land, in the sky, in the sea are doing salah of Allah. Meaning: they are all connecting with God. They're connecting with their Creator.
This also tells us something about the WHY of salah. What we're learning is that by the very fact that you are a creation of God, as a result, you must connect with God. It's essential for you. No matter what creation of God you are, whether you're human being or not, connection with God i.e. salah is essential for you. This applies across the board to every creature of God.
That's very beautiful because sometimes we think that salah is kind of unnatural. It's a bit abnormal. Especially when we have to pray in public or even sometimes when we're just praying in private. It almost seems like we're going out of our way. It's not a typical thing to do these motions: to stand, sit, prostrate, and bow. It feels like we're sort of the odd one out. We're doing something that's a bit unnatural to the usual rhythm, to the usual routine of things.
But Allah is reminding us that in fact, connecting with God, i.e. salah is actually the most natural thing you can do. So when you do salah, you are not misaligned... rather, you are aligning yourself with ALL of creation, with ALL of nature.
It's actually abnormal NOT to do that. It's actually very unnatural for a creature of God to not connect with its Creator on a regular basis. You see?
So hopefully this gives you a level of confidence in that you're aligning yourself with all of creation. You're praying with the birds. You're praying with all the creatures out there.
So remember that you're aligning yourself with all of creation when you do salah. Connection with God is essential to every creature of God.
And by the way, this is something I never heard growing up. No one had ever told me, until I was around the age of 30. That when I learnt: It's not just us that does salah and connects with God. Literally, everything and everyone out there does as well.
