224 BC. A young military officer named Meng Tian rides into battle as part of Qin's campaign to unify a fractured China. Within three years, Qin conquers every rival state, and Meng Tian becomes one of the new empire's most trusted generals.
Given command of an army 300,000 strong, Meng Tian drives back the nomadic Xiongnu and connects a series of disconnected defensive walls into a single continuous barrier, the structure history will remember as the Great Wall of China. The emperor trusts him so completely that he sends his own son, Prince Fusu, to serve alongside him.
When the emperor dies suddenly in 210 BC, a palace conspiracy forges an imperial edict ordering both the prince and the general to take their own lives. What follows is one of history's most tragic betrayals: a general who suspected the forgery, a prince who obeyed anyway, and an empire that would collapse within three years of destroying the men who built it.
The wall Meng Tian built outlives the empire that built it by more than two thousand years.
