The one-off session doesn't only fail the dog. It quietly wears down the woman delivering it, whether she's a behaviourist, a nutritionist, a physiotherapist, a bodyworker or a healer. In this episode, I do the maths on the one-off model, at my old rate of $40 a session and at $300 a session. The numbers look very different, but the shape stays the same: more clients, more homes, more crises, and every quiet month a pay cut. Then I look at what that volume does to us. Drawing on research into burnout, emotional labour, chronic stress and quality of care, I make the case that burnout in our industry isn't a personal failing. It's built into the structure of the work, and it can be built out. In this episode: • What it really takes to earn $3,000 a month at $40 a session, and at $300 • Why raising the price helps but doesn't change the shape of the one-off model • What burnout actually is, and why the research places it in the conditions of the work, not the character of the worker • The emotional labour of every consult, and why none of it gets priced • How chronic, everyday work stress builds up in the body over time • Why an exhausted professional misses things, and who pays for it • What we teach caregivers about load, recovery and rest, and why the one-off model asks us to ignore every one of those lessons in our own bodies • How a container changes the conditions: fewer clients, held for longer, paid for the whole arc Reflection question: Do the maths on last month. How many sessions did you run? How many unpaid hours sat around them? Divide what you earned by all of it. What's your real hourly rate? Reply to my email or send me a DM. I read every one.
