What did German WW2 soldiers actually do all day when they weren’t fighting?
Beer, sausages and an accordion in a sunny French village. For a few weeks in 1940, that’s what the war looked like for some German soldiers. Then they were sent east.
October 1941. You’re a German infantryman somewhere on the road to Moscow. You were promised a lightning war and “home by Christmas.” Instead, you wake up before dawn on straw in a peasant’s hut, your boots are still wet, and the road outside has turned into a river of mud.
In this animated WW2 documentary, we follow one representative German infantryman through a single day on the Eastern Front, from the dawn alert until late at night.
You’ll see what a soldier of the “blitzkrieg” army really spent his time doing:
Digging foxholes that fill with water faster than you can dig them
Eating rock-hard army bread and barley “coffee” while the field kitchen is stuck in the mud
Cleaning rifles and the MG-34, fighting lice, and swapping rotten socks for foot wraps
Hauling ammunition with horses, because the trucks can’t move
Patrolling birch groves, surviving mortar fire, and waiting for attacks that never come
Taking food from local villagers, and what that meant for the people who lived there
Reading letters from home and standing guard on freezing nights
The army that looked unstoppable in the summer of 1941 didn’t get stuck in one great battle. It got stuck in mud, endless distances, and its own overconfidence. And by winter, it was asking German housewives for their fur coats.
HISTORICAL SETTING:
Eastern Front • October 1941 • Operation Typhoon • Road to Moscow • Rasputitsa (autumn mud season) • World War II
HISTORICAL DETAILS:
Kar98k • MG-34 • Wehrmacht infantry • Field kitchens • Horse-drawn supply • Foot wraps • Feldpost • Pervitin • Winter clothing collection 1941
This is a dramatized, representative day based on the historical routines and conditions of German infantrymen on the Eastern Front. It is not a reconstruction of one documented soldier’s experience, and it does not glorify the Wehrmacht or the war it fought.
