In this clip, researcher Harry Sahota walks Tarun Bindlish through where the 1500 BCE date for the Rigveda actually came from, and why he argues the archaeology no longer supports it. He traces the timeline back to 19th-century colonial scholarship, the reconstruction of Proto-Indo-European, and Max Müller's role in fixing the dates that textbooks still print. Only about 5% of the Bhirrana site has been excavated so far. The clip covers three separate strands of evidence and what each one is claimed to show: settlement, religion, and language. Proto-Indo-European is a reconstructed language — it has no surviving text, no inscription, and no attested speaker; Harry argues it was reverse-engineered backwards from Sanskrit, Latin and Greek. On the settlement side, the Bhirrana finds include a copper furnace, lapis lazuli and carnelian beads that are not native to India and would have been imported, arrowheads and fishing tools, and copper bangles from a layer that predates the conventional dating of copper technology by thousands of years. On the language side, he explains why Sanskrit cannot be dated the way a written text is dated — the Vedic recitation system encodes each line in multiple interlocking patterns, so altering one word breaks the chain, a structure he compares to a blockchain. The final stretch maps Rigvedic geography: nine rivers named in Mandalas 2 to 7, settlements clustered on only four of them, the Indus not yet central, and two rivers that no longer exist on any map.
