Line of Fire Safety is not simply about telling workers to “stay clear.” The real challenge is recognizing where hazardous energy can travel before something moves, falls, swings, rolls, releases, rotates, or fails. In Part 1 of this Line of Fire Safety training, I explain how to recognize line-of-fire exposure using practical industrial examples from lifting operations, moving vehicles, pipe handling, machinery, stored pressure, conveyors, pinch points, crush zones, and suspended loads. We also look beyond basic safety rules and discuss why line-of-fire incidents still happen even when workers know the hazard—including familiarity, unsafe body positioning, weak exclusion zones, assumptions, and controls that look good on paper but fail in the field. A simple method to remember: ENERGY → PATH → PEOPLE Ask yourself: 1. Where is the energy? 2. If something moves or fails, where can it go? 3. Who is in that path? Topics covered: • What Line of Fire really means • Struck-by hazards • Caught-between and crush zones • Hand and finger pinch points • Suspended loads and swing paths • Rolling pipes and stored materials • Vehicles and mobile equipment • Stored pressure and released energy • Machinery and unexpected movement • Human factors and familiarity • JSA controls versus actual field controls • Practical Line of Fire recognition Part 2 will focus on controlling Line of Fire exposure through effective exclusion zones, safe positioning, hands-free handling, escape routes, vehicle and pedestrian separation, communication, Stop Work Authority, supervision, and field verification.
