At the end of the last dive on the last day of diving, 13 August 2026, Manta Rey, Puntitos*, know locally and believed to be a resident arrived. Organizations like Manta Costa Rica and others are conducting research to protect the gentle giants. They are collecting and comparing DNA, historically they would have a photo library of the underbelly (the Mantas fingerprint) to compare, and recently they are using satellite to track their movements. Knowing their movements helps inform those who make decisions on shipping lanes and protected areas. They are doing so much more, see below.

These projects are important often rely on outside assistance.
(* In the video, I say puntos, but this Manta has little dots, so accurately name Puntitos.
August 2026 trip with Fins Attached (https://finsattached.org/expeditions/) to Costa Rica, Pacific Ocean. The trip focused on turtle egg recovery, coral restoration, and marine life to include manta rays and of course sharks with no gurantees. The Coral reef restoration was done through Oceans Unlimited in Quepos which offered training, a PADI certification and intern and volunteer opportunities. The experience with the turtles is a grass roots effort from, Milo, a local who loves sharks, mantas and turtles, but who is only in a position to help them. We spent two days, of Isla Del Cano with Costa Rica Surf and Dive and a researcher and director of Manta Costa Rica. The final day in Esquipulas Rain Forest, with a supporter of Finsattached and nurturing a better environment and education.
I appreciate these citizen science trips as they keep your mind engaged and the wonderful, like minded individuals on the trip. While many of the trips are open to scuba divers of all levels and snorkels, from my experience the more dives and training you have the more you will get out of the trip. Also, being prepared for the information sessions and not just hitting the bars, nightlife or the sack.
