Guru Amubi Singh

Guru Amubi Singh was the grand patriarch of Manipuri dance, so-called because it originated from Manipur, a North-Eastern state of India. He said, “Do not hurt the mother earth.” And all his life, he drew his inspiration from Mother Earth. The film beautifully demonstrates the Guru’ finely honed style of dancing based on the spontaneous rhythm of nature. His style blends the traditional and the modern. Guru Amubi Singh was a versatile artiste. He wrote books on Vaishnava legends. For several years, he was associated with great dance maestro, Uday Shankar. He retired as Principal of Jawaharlal Nehru Academy and bid farewell to this world on June 29, 1972.
