Top 50 Countries by Gold Reserves in 2026. The fifty countries holding the most gold, counted down from number 50 to number 1 — every stack drawn to scale. The scale is the story here. Malaysia sits at number 50 with 39 tonnes. The United States sits at number 1 with 8,133 — more than two hundred times as much, and more than the next three countries put together. Germany, Italy and France have barely moved their holdings in decades. China and Russia have spent years quietly buying. Switzerland, once near the very top, sold more than half of its gold after 2000. Watch how small the towers stay through most of the countdown, then what happens in the final ten. 📊 On the data: figures are official reserves reported to the IMF and compiled by the World Gold Council. They cover central bank holdings only — privately held gold, which is much larger in countries like India, is not included. Numbers shift as central banks buy and sell, so treat these as current-as-of-2026 rather than fixed. Which country's position surprised you? Comment below. 🔔 Subscribe for more data visualisations.
