In 1995, filmmaker Patrick Heaphy traveled to Dannemora with Jason Keller and Frank Cooley to film one of Tupac Shakur's most candid and revealing conversations inside the maximum-security prison while it was on lockdown.
What most people don’t know is why they were there.
The interview was originally intended to help promote a proposed jailhouse concert against youth violence, bringing Tupac and other artists together around a cause that remains painfully relevant today.
The concert never happened.
The interview did.
The Tupac Prison Interview presents Tupac at a remarkable moment in his life: 24 years old, incarcerated, already one of the most talked-about artists in America, and speaking candidly about prison, his future, his career and the world waiting for him outside.
The footage was personally filmed by Patrick Heaphy, who owns the U.S.-registered copyright to the original 1995 interview.
More than three decades later, Heaphy and LCM247 are also revisiting the unfinished mission that originally brought the camera to Dannemora — with plans to develop a new concert against youth violence featuring artists of today and honoring the extraordinary cultural influence Tupac left behind.
The original camera used to film the interview and original source tapes from the production are also planned to be offered at auction, with a portion of the proceeds intended to help seed the new concert.
