Ten ways an English peasant family got through a medieval winter, counted down from number ten to number one. Each one made sense inside the village. Each one would be dangerous to you now.
The film follows one household from January 1308. Edith, her husband Thomas and their children sleep in one bed beside a banked hearth. They wear the same wool clothes all winter. They lay rushes and straw over an earth floor. Every entry shows what the family did, why it worked, and what it would do to a modern person.
The story keeps returning to one point. The fire that kept the bed warm sat a few steps from a thatched roof, and the coroners' rolls record the house fires that followed. The wool that held heat also held lice, and body lice carry typhus. The film asks why a family would choose these risks, and its answer is that every protection came with a cost they had to manage by hand.
