Cadillac Built a Better V16 — So Why Did It Disappear?

In 1938, Cadillac introduced one of the strangest and most ambitious engines Detroit had ever built: a massive 431-cubic-inch V16 with an unusually wide 135-degree layout. It was lighter, simpler, and more powerful than the legendary V16 it replaced. Sixteen cylinders delivered an almost impossibly smooth flow of power, while the flathead design made the engine so quiet that Cadillac could sell silence itself as a form of luxury. Even more remarkably, this enormous machine could pull a heavy Series 90 from low speed toward highway pace with barely any need to shift gears. On paper, Cadillac appeared to have perfected the V16. Yet only a little more than 500 examples were built. Why would Cadillac abandon an engine that worked exactly as intended?
