Yamagata Shinkansen: Fukushima Station's New Inbound Approach Line | Construction Overview and Train Operations in 2026 A new inbound approach line for the Yamagata Shinkansen is scheduled to enter service at Fukushima Station by the end of Japan's fiscal year 2026 (March 2027). In this video, we explore the new railway infrastructure using footage filmed from several locations, including Fukushima Station's Shinkansen platforms, ground-level viewpoints along the new approach line, and Mount Shinobu (Shinobuyama), which offers a panoramic view of the station and surrounding railway lines. Under the current operating arrangement, Tokyo-bound Yamabiko services must cross the southbound Tohoku Shinkansen tracks to enter Platform 14 at Fukushima Station. After arriving, the Yamabiko waits for the inbound Tsubasa service from Yamagata. The two trains are coupled together before departing for Tokyo, crossing the southbound tracks once again. We captured the entire sequence, including the Yamabiko negotiating multiple switches on its approach to Platform 14, the opening of its front coupler cover, the arrival and coupling of the Tsubasa, and the combined train's departure toward Tokyo. The new approach line, approximately 1.3 kilometers long, connects the Ou Main Line with the northbound Shinkansen platforms at Fukushima Station. Once operational, inbound Tsubasa services will use the new approach line to enter Platform 11, eliminating the two conflicting movements across the southbound Tohoku Shinkansen tracks. This improvement is expected to enhance operational reliability, increase timetable flexibility, and reduce recovery times following service disruptions.
