NAIROBI'S MODERN MARKET TAKES SHAPE Welcome to another infrastructure update from NAIROBI CONNECT — We Move and Tell! 🇰🇪 Today, we take you to Gikomba Market in Nairobi, where major rehabilitation and redevelopment works are transforming one of Kenya's busiest commercial hubs. The project forms part of the wider Nairobi River Regeneration Programme, coordinated by the Nairobi Rivers Commission, with the involvement of the national government and Nairobi City County. 🏗️ WHAT IS HAPPENING AT GIKOMBA MARKET? The redevelopment aims to provide a more modern, organised and safer trading environment for thousands of traders while improving the surrounding urban environment. The first phase features three modern multistorey market blocks designed to accommodate thousands of traders. The wider development includes improved trading spaces, sanitation facilities, enhanced security, fire-safety infrastructure and better access for the movement of goods. Additional planned amenities include cold-storage facilities, a fish-processing area, childcare facilities and designated waste collection points. 🌿 WHY IS THE PROJECT IMPORTANT? Gikomba's rehabilitation is about more than constructing new market buildings. It is also connected to the wider Nairobi River Regeneration Programme, which seeks to restore the river corridor, address environmental degradation, improve waste management and protect riparian areas. The transformation is expected to improve trading conditions, support local businesses, enhance public health and contribute to the regeneration of Nairobi's urban environment. 📍 PROJECT PROGRESS On 5 October 2026, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja reported that Phase One had reached 98% completion.
