Stalin Hid 1,000 Tanks Outside Stalingrad. The Trap Closed in 4 Days
At a quarter past six in the morning on the twenty-second of November, nineteen forty-two, a Soviet armored column drove down to the bridge over the Don River at Kalach with its headlights on.
The matchup, laid bare:
How Zhukov and Vasilevsky aimed two armored pincers at the Romanian armies guarding the Sixth Army's flanks.
Seventeen false bridges, night crossings of the Volga and radio silence hid the true size of the Soviet buildup.
The German reserve behind the Romanians had about thirty running tanks, and mice had chewed through the wiring.
Lt. Col. Georgy Filippov's column drove onto the Kalach bridge with its headlights on and took it intact.
The ring closed at Sovetsky on 23 November 1942, trapping 250,000 to 300,000 Axis troops instead of the 90,000 Moscow expected.
The matchup numbers on Operation Uranus are pinned up top.
