How do you successfully pivot your career after getting laid off, especially when you have no experience in the industry you want to enter? Joe Sebok has been laid off at least six times throughout his career. By age 24, he'd already experienced four layoffs during the dot-com boom. But instead of following one traditional career path, he repeatedly reinvented himself. From tech startups to professional poker, running a poker media company, recruiting, and eventually entrepreneurship, Joe has built a career around embracing change and being willing to start something new. In this episode of Pink Slip Pavilion, host Ashley Waddington sits down with Joe to talk about navigating multiple layoffs, changing industries, overcoming the fear of starting over, and learning how to make a successful career pivot. And here's what makes his story particularly interesting: Joe entered several of those industries with absolutely no prior experience. So how did he do it? A combination of transferable skills, relationships, a willingness to learn, and a mindset that helped him see opportunities where others might only see obstacles. In this conversation, we explore: How to pivot your career after a layoff Changing careers without previous industry experience Navigating multiple layoffs throughout your career Using your network to break into a new industry Recognizing transferable skills when changing careers Managing fear and uncertainty after job loss Rebuilding confidence and resilience Why your career doesn't have to follow a straight line Finding opportunities in unexpected places Pursuing something you're passionate about while job searching Joe also shares one of his favorite mindset lessons: “Don't feed the monkey.” That negative voice in your head telling you you're not qualified, you're falling behind, or you'll never figure things out? You don't have to believe everything it tells you. And if you're currently unemployed, Joe has another piece of advice that might surprise you: Build something else while you're looking for work. Start a blog. Explore a passion. Create something. Try something new. Not everything you do during unemployment needs to revolve around finding your next job. Sometimes those experiences introduce you to new people, build your confidence, and open doors you never expected. Your career doesn't have to be linear to be successful. And you don't have to have all the answers before making your next move.
