"Men are disturbed not by things, but by the views which they take of things." Epictetus, Enchiridion 5
You are not your thoughts. A Stoic practice for examining every impression before you believe it.
Is this thought true, or is it only loud?
A former slave who taught emperors, and a statesman who feared more in imagination than in reality, drew the oldest map of the distance between what happens to you and what you decide it means. Modern psychology later found the same battlefield and gave it new names: cognitive fusion, the observing self.
In this video we walk five scenes of the inner life, drawing on Epictetus (Enchiridion, Discourses), Seneca (Letters to Lucilius) and Marcus Aurelius (Meditations):
00:00 The silent war inside the mind
01:08 The Gallery of Mirrors: judgment, not events
04:24 The Sentinel at the Gate: assent (sunkatathesis) and the pause
07:32 The Basin of Water: the ruling faculty (hegemonikon)
10:04 The Prisoner and the Chain: hope, fear and the present hour
12:47 The Rock in the Sea: the evening examination
This is not a lesson in becoming cold or indifferent. It is a Stoic practice of attention: examining each impression before you believe it.
Stoic Anchor explores the philosophy of Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus, and Seneca, as it was actually lived, not as internet self-help.
