This song is about learning to live after losing my dad.
He died on Father’s Day in 2016, aged just 52. Nearly ten years later, I still don’t believe that time “heals” grief. You don’t simply get over losing someone. Life carries on, you build new memories, you laugh again and you find happiness again, but the person you lost remains part of you.
For me, there genuinely hasn’t been a single day since Dad died where he hasn’t crossed my mind.
Sometimes it’s a song. Sometimes it’s football. Sometimes it’s something one of my children does. Sometimes one of his sayings comes out of my own mouth. And very often it’s simply the thought:
“Dad would’ve loved this.”
This song isn’t about the day I lost him. It’s about everything that came afterwards, and eventually understanding that grief doesn’t disappear.
You just learn how to carry it.

Lyrics
Everybody went home, but life didn't stop
There were boxes to clear and people to look after
Two little girls needed me, everyone needed something
So I kept myself moving, 'cause stopping felt harder
They said I never grieved, I never let it out
Maybe they were waiting for tears that never came
But they never saw me driving around at two in the morning
Just trying not to sit still long enough to feel the pain
I didn't know how to lose you
So I learned how to stay busy instead
Time didn't heal me
It just taught me how to carry you
How to build a life around the space
Where I still wish that I could find you
I don't wake up broken like I did back then
But missing you never went away
I learned how to live without you
But there hasn't been a day
I don't watch half the things that we used to anymore
Turns out the game wasn't the same without you there
You said Klopp would bring the good days back to Liverpool
You were right, I just wish we'd got to share them
Your number's still there whenever I scroll through my phone
Your bass is on the wall, your old mug's on the shelf
And sometimes one of your stupid jokes comes out of my mouth
And for a second, I can hear you in myself
Time didn't heal me
It just taught me how to carry you
How to build a life around the space
Where I still wish that I could find you
I don't wake up broken like I did back then
But missing you never went away
I learned how to live without you
But there hasn't been a day
You should see the dad I've become
I think you'd understand it more than most
The girls wear Liverpool shirts, they kick a ball around
And there's so much I still wish I could show you
Every new memory leaves me thinking the same thing
Every laugh, every milestone I wish you could see
"Dad would've loved this" still comes so easily
I keep collecting stories with nowhere to send them
Time didn't heal me
It just taught me how to carry you
And somehow I found happiness again
Without ever having to stop missing you
I'm not the same man I was before
Maybe part of me changed that day
But I learned how to live without you
And there still hasn't been a day
I used to wonder how someone
Could think of somebody every day
Now I know.
