300 million years ago, during the Carboniferous period, giant insects ruled a world of endless swamp forest. Arthropleura, a millipede longer than a human, crawled through the undergrowth - and Meganeura, a dragonfly with a 70cm wingspan, hunted the skies. This is the story of why ancient bugs grew to nightmare sizes, and what ended their reign. Take a prehistoric journey into Earth's ancient past to discover why giant insects and colossal arthropods ruled the Carboniferous period long before the age of dinosaurs. Explore the fascinating evolution of megafauna in a lush swamp environment frozen in time. A dragonfly with a 70-centimetre wingspan. A millipede stretching beyond two metres. A scorpion 70 centimetres long, hunting in freshwater pools. These animals were real. And the only reason they could exist is that the planet's atmosphere worked differently from ours. This prehistoric documentary reconstructs the Carboniferous ecosystem from the fossil record - the coal swamp forests, the oxygen-rich atmosphere that may have helped some insects reach extraordinary sizes, and the ecological web that connected giants and predators across 60 million years of Earth's history. We cover Meganeura (the giant griffinfly), Arthropleura (the largest known terrestrial arthropod), Pulmonoscorpius (the 70cm Carboniferous scorpion from East Kirkton, Scotland), and Hibbertopterus (the eurypterid whose six-metre trackway was found in Fife in 2005). Every claim is drawn from peer-reviewed palaeontology. Where the science is uncertain or debated, we say so. High oxygen alone cannot explain Carboniferous gigantism. Body design, climate, food availability, and ecological competition all played a role. The real story is more complex, and more interesting, than the legend of the monster bugs. When the coal forests declined and Earth's climate shifted at the end of the Carboniferous, the conditions that had supported these giants began to disappear. The animals didn't fail. The planet stopped asking for them. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 0:00 The Era of Colossal Arthropods 1:36 Inside the Carboniferous Forest 4:13 Masters of the Ancient Skies 5:53 The Gentle Giant of the Forest Floor 9:10 Scorpions and Sea Giants 🦕 NEW GIANT EVERY FRIDAY - see the lost world rebuilt, one extinct giant at a time. ▶ Subscribe to the channel:    / @monstersbeforeus   This channel reconstructs prehistoric megafauna and extinct giants from palaeontology and the fossil record.
