What you are now watching and listening to is a compilation of highlights from various 1971 tours by the British Progressive Rock supergroup Emerson Lake & Palmer. This two hour and fifteen minute assemblage contains every setlist item performed during the 128 concerts played that year supporting three different albums. There was also a track from the upcoming 1972 album Trilogy performed at some of the late 1971 concert dates. This post largely features rearranged video from a Belgian TV show called Pop Shop which was filmed on February 6 and 7 1971 at Théâtre 140 in Schaerbeek/Brussels, Belgium The audio tracks, synched to pictures of ELP live performances and graphics of that era, are from these 1971 shows as detailed further below: Boston, Massachusetts Karlsruhe, Germany Sheffield, United Kingdom Zofingen, Switzerland The year 1971 was quite productive for Emerson Lake & Palmer. After keyboardist and composer Keith Emerson left his group The Nice, singer and guitarist Greg Lake departed King Crimson and a 20 year old drum prodigy named Carl Palmer was snared from The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown, the new power trio recorded their eponymous debut album from July through September of 1970. It was released in November 1970 in the United Kingdom and in January 1971 in the United States. Emerson, Lake & Palmer' planned to record Pictures At An Exhibition (the piano suite by Modest Mussorgsky) for their next album, but decided instead to make a piece called Tarkus the centerpiece and title track. During a break in their first tour for their debut album in January 1971, ELP returned to London's Advision Studios with engineer/producer Eddy Offord to record their second album Tarkus. The album was a commercial success, reaching No. 1 in the UK and No. 9 in the US. On March 26, 1971 at stop on their UK tour at Newcastle City Hall in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, the group performed Pictures At An Exhibition and released the recording in the United Kingdom as their first live album (third overall). Released in November of that year, the album went to #3 on the UK charts in December, thanks in part to its budget price of £1.49. The group figured that since it cost them very little to make, they shouldn't charge much for it. In America, their label Atlantic Records had no interest in the album because there were no sections that could be spun off as singles, making radio play very unlikely. It was sent out to U.S. radio stations as a live promotional disc to generate publicity for the nascent musical endeavor. It was never scheduled for public release in the United States but after the DJ Scott Muni of the New York City FM radio station WNEW repeatedly broadcast the entire album listeners demanded it be put on sale. The band's U.K. label, Island, responded by shipping copies to America, which sold very well and prodded Atlantic into issuing it Stateside, where it climbed to #10. 1.
