At a local train show, a vendor handed me a true basket case—a Lionel 1668 locomotive that was headed straight for the junk pile. He told me, “If you can fix it, it’s yours,” and I couldn’t turn down a challenge like that. This classic prewar 1668, once a proud little steamer from the late 1930s, had seen better days. The wiring was brittle, the paint was tired, and the E-unit was completely nonfunctional. But that’s what makes these projects special—bringing history back to life one part at a time. In this video, I’ll take you through the process of tearing down this worn-out locomotive, cleaning the old parts, replacing the wiring, buffing the wheels, and getting that motor to hum again. There’s something rewarding about saving a train that someone else thought was beyond repair and watching it come back to life on the track, just like it did nearly 90 years ago. Join me as we give this 1668 a second chance and prove that no Lionel train is ever too far gone when it’s in the hands of a true train enthusiast. This is what Grampys Lionel Trains is all about—preserving history, one rescue at a time.Lionel 1668, Lionel trains, prewar Lionel trains, Lionel restoration, Lionel repair, vintage Lionel trains, train restoration, model train repair, classic toy trains, Lionel locomotive repair, prewar train restoration, Lionel train collecting, toy train workshop, model railroad repair, train show finds, Lionel E-unit repair, Lionel wiring repair, restoring old trains, saving vintage trains, Lionel collectors, O gauge trains, vintage toy trains, Grampys Lionel Trains, Lionel train layout, Lionel train motor repair, train enthusiast, toy train restoration, Lionel steam locomotive, train junk pile rescue, repairing antique trains, Lionel prewar locomotive, classic Lionel restoration, model train hobby, American Flyer and Lionel, train repair tips, Lionel train videos, vintage train repair, rescue restoration project, Lionel 1668 restoration, old train restoration.--- GRAMPY'S WORKBENCH MUST-HAVES ---
