Jesus Wept — If Lazarus Was About to Be Raised, Why Did Jesus Cry? | John 11:1–44
*“Jesus wept.”*
John 11:35 is one of the shortest and most familiar verses in the Bible.
But when we read everything happening around those two words, an important question emerges:
*If Jesus was about to raise Lazarus from the dead, why did He cry?*
📖 *Bible Passage: John 11:1–44*
Lazarus was sick.
His sisters, Martha and Mary, sent word to Jesus.
But by the time Jesus arrived in Bethany, Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.
Martha went out to meet Jesus.
Later, Mary came to Him as well.
She fell at His feet and said:
*“Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.”*
Mary was weeping.
The people who had come with her were weeping too.
And then...
*“Jesus wept.”*
But the story does not end with His tears.
Jesus went to the tomb.
He told them to remove the stone.
He prayed.
And then He cried out with a loud voice:
*“Lazarus, come forth.”*
And the man who had been dead came out.
In this episode of **Beyond the Verse**, we return to the full story of John 11 to discover what happened before and after one of the most memorable verses in the Bible.
The text does not give us one simple sentence explaining every reason Jesus wept.
Instead, it shows us Jesus standing in the presence of death, seeing Mary weeping and the people with her weeping.
And Jesus wept too.
Knowing what would happen next did not make the grief of that moment insignificant.
Sometimes we know the ending of a Bible story so well...
*that we forget what it was like for the people who were still living through the painful part of it.*
*Beyond the Verse.*
*Because sometimes, when we are living through the most painful chapter of our story... we still haven’t reached the final verse.*
