🎼 Lyrics – Sisi
They dressed me in gold
and called it a life.
Marble halls,
a crown made of walls.
I learned how to smile
where silence was law,
but somewhere beyond...
the sea was calling me.
No palace could contain
the wind that carried my name.
No mirror could ever tell me
what I had become.
I am the gull above the water,
I am the road that never stays.
No place can ever hold me,
no court can command my way.
Call me empress,
call me Titania —
I belong to neither name.
If freedom lives beyond the palaces,
let the tide erase my chains.
Corfu in the distance,
salt upon the air.
I passed there like the wind
and left my shadow there.
Every harbor promised
a life without a crown.
Every road I followed
carried me farther on.
Titania walks at midnight,
alone beneath the stars.
A queen without a kingdom,
a woman behind the mask.
I crossed the seas
to escape the name —
but the name
sailed on with me.
Call me empress,
call me Titania —
I belong to neither name.
If freedom lives beyond the palaces,
let the tide erase my chains.
Strange was the morning.
There was an ending
in the air.
A flash of steel —
then silence.
The gull still crosses the water.
The tide still reaches
the shore.
The crown
was left behind.
And I was finally...
beyond its reach.

📖 Philosophical and Critical Analysis:
“Sisi” constructs imperial identity as a paradox of possession and dispossession. Gold, marble and the crown traditionally signify privilege, permanence and sovereignty, yet the lyric reverses their meaning: gold becomes confinement, marble becomes enclosure, and the crown becomes “walls.” The central conflict is therefore not between poverty and power, but between externally assigned identity and interior autonomy. The repeated refusal — “Call me empress, call me Titania / I belong to neither name” — transforms naming itself into an instrument of domination. Elisabeth exists between historical title and poetic alter ego, while neither category fully contains the self that speaks. The song consequently approaches freedom not as political authority but as the right to remain irreducible to the names imposed by others.
The recurring images of sea, wind, road, harbor and gull establish movement as the philosophical opposite of the court. The palace is static; water refuses permanence. Corfu functions less as geographical documentation than as a threshold in the narrator's search for an existence beyond ceremony. Yet the decisive line — “I crossed the seas / to escape the name — / but the name / sailed on with me” — destroys the romantic illusion that physical departure necessarily produces existential freedom. The imperial identity has become internalized and portable. Even Titania, invoked as a figure of imaginative sovereignty, becomes another mask. The result is a profound meditation on exile: one may leave a palace, a country or a social role, while discovering that the structures one fled have already entered the architecture of the self.
The final movement radically redefines death. “A flash of steel — then silence” refuses melodrama and reduces assassination to an abrupt rupture, after which the narrative voice paradoxically continues. The gull still moves, the tide still reaches the shore, and the crown remains behind. This posthumous continuation gives the ending a metaphysical dimension without imposing a specific religious doctrine: consciousness becomes poetic presence, liberated from institutional identity. The final statement — “And I was finally... beyond its reach” — completes the structural inversion established at the beginning. The crown that once enclosed the speaker can no longer name, command or possess her. Death is therefore not presented simply as defeat, but as the terrible fulfillment of the freedom that life, privilege and endless travel could never completely provide.
