Answer : Isolation transformers provide separation from the power line ground connection to eliminate ground loops and inadvertent test equipment grounding. Q2 : Do I need an isolation transformer ? Answer : Electrical isolation is necessary to protect circuits, equipment, and people from shocks and short circuits, as well as to make accurate measurements. Isolation transformers are one way to go. Electrical isolation is necessary to protect circuits, equipment, and people from shocks and short circuits. Q3 : Does isolation transformer change voltage ? Answer : The isolation transformer does not change either the power or the voltage and current levels. Q4 : Can you get a shock from an isolation transformer ? Answer : The output of the isolation transformer still has a nominal output voltage of 230V between its output conductors, but there is no link to earth. This means that you can safely touch either conductor without risk of electric shock. You will still get an electric shock if you touch both conductors however ! Q5 : Should oscilloscope be grounded ? Answer : Grounding is also necessary for taking accurate measurements with your oscilloscope. The oscilloscope needs to share the same ground as any circuits you are testing. Some oscilloscopes do not require separate connection to earth ground. Q6 : Are all transformers isolation transformers ? Answer : Practically all transformers (with the exception of Autotransformers) are, in fact, Isolation Transformer.
