NOSIVIWE MAPISA-NQAKULA CORRUPTION TRIAL CONTINUES | 22 SEPTEMBER 2026

Former National Assembly Speaker and former Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula is back in the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria as her corruption and money-laundering trial continues. Mapisa-Nqakula is currently presenting her defence after the court dismissed her application for a discharge under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Act. Judge Mashudu Munzhelele ruled that there was a prima facie case for her to answer. She faces 12 counts of corruption and one count of money laundering. The State alleges that she solicited approximately R4.5 million, with about R2.1 million allegedly received in cash, from a defence service provider during her tenure as Minister of Defence and Military Veterans. Mapisa-Nqakula has denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty. The former Speaker has been giving evidence in her own defence and responding to allegations involving defence contractor and State witness Nombasa Ntsondwa-Ndhlovu. Proceedings were interrupted last week after Mapisa-Nqakula became unwell while testifying.
