In the mountains of western Jamaica, there's a Maroon community that has governed itself under its own treaty since 1739 — Accompong Town, founded by Africans who fought off the British Empire and never lost their independence. For centuries, its people have repeated a story that outsiders dismissed as folklore: that some of their earliest ancestors weren't only African, but also descended from Jamaica's original people, the Taíno — a population most historians assumed had vanished long before the Maroons ever existed. In 2018, a historian and a genetic anthropologist finally tested that story against three separate types of DNA. Only one side of the family tree told the story everyone expected.
This video covers how the study worked — combining historical records, oral history, and three lines of DNA evidence (mitochondrial, Y-chromosome, and autosomal) sequenced from fifty people with documented genealogical ties to Accompong Town; what the results confirmed about the community's African origins, including a direct genetic link to a specific region of West Africa; what turned up in the maternal line that historians had spent generations dismissing as legend; and what it means for anyone of Jamaican or wider Caribbean descent researching their own family history today.
