Why did Jesus write in the sand? When the religious leaders brought a woman caught in adultery before Jesus, they expected Him to answer a question that would trap Him. Instead, Jesus bent down and wrote in the dirt. Then He wrote again. But the Gospel of John never tells us what Jesus wrote. So what was Jesus doing in the sand? Was Jesus writing the sins of the accusers? Was He writing Scripture? Was the writing itself meant to create silence and force the crowd to examine their own hearts? In this video, we follow the story of Jesus and the woman caught in adultery and separate what the Bible actually tells us from the theories people have proposed about the mysterious writing in the dirt. But there is a deeper question. Why did Jesus write twice? The Bible does not give us a definitive answer. And that may be exactly what makes this moment so powerful. Jesus did not give the crowd the answer they expected. Instead, He turned the accusation back toward their own hearts. “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone.” And when the crowd was gone, Jesus said: “Neither do I condemn you. Go, and sin no more.” The writing disappeared. The words remained.
