What is localhost? How does localhost work? And how does XAMPP turn your computer into a local web server?
In this beginner-friendly video, I explain exactly what localhost is and how a website works on your own computer without uploading it to a live hosting server.
You’ll understand the complete process of how a browser request travels to your local server, how Apache receives the request, how PHP processes WordPress files, how MySQL stores and retrieves website data, and how the final webpage is sent back to your browser.
This video is especially useful if you are learning WordPress, web development, PHP, XAMPP, or how websites work behind the scenes.
👇 In this video, you'll learn:

00:XX How a website works on a live server
00:XX How your browser connects to a server

00:XX Complete localhost request & response process
💡 SIMPLE EXAMPLE:
When you open:
http://localhost/wordpress
your computer can act as the local server.
The request goes to localhost → Apache receives the request → Apache finds the website files → PHP processes WordPress → WordPress communicates with the database → HTML/CSS/JavaScript and other resources are generated → your browser displays the website.
This is one of the most important concepts to understand before working seriously with WordPress and web development.
🔹 WHAT IS LOCALHOST?
Localhost refers to the computer you are currently using. It allows your own computer to communicate with itself through a local network interface.
IPv4 localhost:
127.0.0.1
IPv6 localhost:
::1
🔹 WHAT IS XAMPP?
XAMPP is a development environment that makes it possible to run web applications locally. It commonly includes:
• Apache
• MariaDB
• PHP
• phpMyAdmin
With XAMPP, you can create and test websites on your computer before moving them to a live hosting server.
🔹 WHY USE LOCALHOST?
You can use localhost to:
• Learn WordPress
• Build websites without buying hosting
• Test themes and plugins
• Develop PHP websites
• Test website changes
• Experiment with databases
• Build websites before deploying them online
🌐 LOCALHOST vs LIVE SERVER
LOCALHOST:
Your website runs on your own computer and is generally used for development and testing.
LIVE SERVER:
Your website runs on an internet-accessible hosting server and can be accessed by other users online.
