This ABC phonics nursery rhyme is an early reading rhyme that goes through the alphabet from A to Z with creatures you might find around a pond, in a field or at the edge of a forest. Frogs, ducks and dragonflies share the alphabet with hares, mice and hedgehogs, and with owls, foxes and deer. Each one is sung slowly beside its letter and its opening sound, so children hear exactly how the name begins.
These are the animals children meet most often in picture books, which is why they work so well for early reading. A child who has heard “f, f, frog” in a rhyme is much more likely to recognize the word when it appears under a picture in a story. The video shows each name in print as it is sung, so children start to link the sound they hear with the letters they see, which is the very first step of reading a word on the page.
