In Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil – Phobos Labs 1: Research, the marine explores one of the critical scientific research facilities on Mars’ moon Phobos. This level is a central hub within the expansion's narrative and gameplay, as it deepens the story surrounding the Union Aerospace Corporation’s (UAC) experiments with ancient artifacts and portal technology. Phobos Labs 1 offers a mix of atmospheric exploration, combat challenges, and environmental storytelling, combining the high-tech ambiance of a research station with the creeping influence of Hell's invasion.
Monsters
Enemies in Phobos Labs 1 reflect the creeping infiltration of Hell’s forces into the facility. The player faces a mix of familiar and new threats, including:
Imps: Agile demons attacking with fireballs, often ambushing the player from vents or elevated positions.
Zombies: Both unarmed and armed versions of zombified UAC personnel create palpable tension, especially in confined corridors.
Hell Knights: Larger, more dangerous demons that serve as mini-bosses at critical junctures.
Lore
Phobos Labs 1 is a vital piece of the lore puzzle within Resurrection of Evil. The facility is dedicated to studying the ancient Martian artifacts and the technology that underpins the UAC’s teleportation experiments. The logs and environmental storytelling reveal that the experiments went awry, with the artifact’s energies causing unpredictable effects on equipment and personnel.
The research uncovers unsettling connections between Mars, the ancient civilization that once inhabited it, and Hell itself. There are hints that the artifact was part of a much older war between Martians and demons, a conflict hidden beneath the surface of Mars' history and now reignited through the UAC’s hubris. The facility’s downfall is depicted through signs of sabotage, malfunctioning machinery, and bloodstained labs, all underscoring humanity’s precarious position amid these cosmic forces.

Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil (RoE) is a standalone expansion pack for Doom 3, developed by Nerve Software and released in April 2005. Set two years after the events of Doom 3, the expansion serves as a continuation of the original game’s story, introducing new weapons, enemies, and gameplay mechanics that enhance the formula established by Doom 3. RoE retains the atmospheric horror and intense combat of its predecessor while adopting a faster-paced and action-oriented approach, making it a compelling addition to the Doom franchise.
Resurrection of Evil expands upon Doom 3's lore, exploring Mars’ ancient connection to Hell. The discovery of the Heart of Hell suggests that Mars was home to a civilization that fought against demonic forces long before humanity arrived. The UAC’s tampering with ancient artifacts and teleportation technology reactivated these dormant pathways to Hell, unleashing chaos once again. The environmental storytelling in Martian ruins and Hell reinforces themes of hubris and the consequences of seeking power beyond comprehension.
Why does Doom 3 suck so good? It still looks amazing 19 years later. In this game play I got BFG pretty early. So, final question - Is DOOM 3 BFG Edition WORSE Than The Original?! Let's find out!
