【鷹羽山歩】香春町万葉歌碑をゆく。｜石を読むたび、千三百年前の誰かに出会う。｜Words may change, but the flutter of the heart does not.

福岡県田川郡、香春町という町がある。香春岳という、三つの峰からなる山が町の背後にそびえている。一ノ岳、二ノ岳、三ノ岳と呼ばれ、遠くから見ると、まるで屏風を立てたような姿である。 この山からは、かつて銅が採れたという。奈良の東大寺大仏を鋳造する際、香春の銅が用いられたと伝えられている。都から遠く離れたこの土地が、大仏という国家的事業を支えていたということになる。 香春はまた、万葉集にゆかりの地としても知られている。奈良時代、都と地方とのあいだを、人も物も、そして言葉も行き来していた。役人として赴任した者、防人として召された者、それぞれがこの地を通り、あるいはこの地に留まり、歌を詠んだ。石に刻まれた歌碑は、そうした千三百年前の言葉を、今に伝えている。 風が、歌碑のあいだを縫うように吹いていた。まるで石そのものが、まだ言い足りぬことを抱えているかのように。万葉の歌には、政治や儀礼を詠んだものもあれば、ごく個人的な、恋の歌もある。誰かを想い、会えない時間を嘆き、再会を願う——そうした感情は、時代がどれほど隔たっても、変わらないものであるらしい。現代の言葉で言えば「キュン」とする瞬間を、奈良時代の人々もまた、経験していたのだろう。 歌碑を一つずつ訪ねて歩くという行為は、単なる史跡巡りとは少し違う。石に刻まれた文字を読むごとに、千三百年前、この道を歩いていた誰かの息づかいに触れるようなものである。その誰かが、何を想い、誰を恋しく思っていたのか、今となっては知る由もない。人ひとりの一生など、この山が眺めてきた歳月の前では、瞬きほどの長さもないのかもしれない。それでも、言葉だけが、風化した石の上に残っている。 香春岳を仰ぎながら歌碑を巡ると、銅を掘り出した山の記憶と、恋を詠んだ人々の記憶とが、同じ土地の上に重なっていることに気づく。国家の事業と、個人の感情と、その両方を同時に抱え込んでいる場所は、案外少ないのかもしれない。 石の前に立つと、ただ風だけが吹いていた。刻まれた言葉は、多くを語らない。ただ、千三百年前のその「キュン」は、今もここで色褪せていない——そのことだけが、確かであるように思われた。 In Tagawa District, Fukuoka Prefecture, there lies a town called Kawara. Behind it rises Mount Kawara, a mountain formed of three peaks — known as the First, Second, and Third Peaks — which from a distance resemble a folding screen standing upright. From this mountain, copper was once mined. It is said that this copper was used in casting the Great Buddha of Tōdai-ji in Nara. A land so distant from the capital had, in this way, supported a project of national significance. Kawara is also known for its connection to the Man'yōshū, Japan's oldest collection of poetry. During the Nara period, people, goods, and words alike traveled between the capital and the provinces. Officials posted here, frontier guards summoned from here, each passed through this land — or remained in it — and composed poems. The stone monuments inscribed with these poems carry those thirteen-century-old words down to the present day. The wind moved between the stones as though threading a needle — as if the stones themselves still held something unsaid. Among the Man'yō poems are some that speak of politics and ceremony, and others that are purely personal — poems of love. Longing for someone, grieving the time apart, wishing for reunion — such feelings, it seems, remain unchanged no matter how far the ages drift apart. What we might call, in modern words, a "flutter of the heart," the people of the Nara period experienced as well. To walk from stone to stone, reading each poem in turn, is something different from an ordinary visit to historical sites. With every inscription read, one comes close to the breath of someone who once walked this same road, thirteen hundred years ago. What that person longed for, whom they loved — there is no way to know now. A single human lifetime, set against the years this mountain has watched pass, may not even amount to the length of a blink. And yet, only the words remain, resting on weathered stone. Looking up at Mount Kawara while tracing the poems, one notices that the memory of copper once mined from the mountain and the memory of those who composed poems of love lie layered upon the same ground. A place that holds, at once, both a matter of the state and a matter of the heart, is perhaps rarer than one might think. Standing before the stones, only the wind was blowing. The words carved in stone say little.
