🌿🫐 Nomads and the Harvest of Organic Hawthorn from the Thousand-Year-Old Trees of the Zagros Mountains
In this video, you will accompany Jahangir Nomads and his sister-in-law, Shokat, on one of the most beautiful autumn days in the Zagros Mountains. They head to the highlands to harvest hawthorn fruit from ancient, thousand-year-old trees; trees that have witnessed successive generations of nomads for years and continue to generously offer their red and delicious fruits.
Wild Hawthorn of the Zagros Mountains; A Red Treasure:
Hawthorn is a plant from the Rosaceae family that grows scattered and solitary in the highlands of the Zagros Mountains and has long been of interest to the local population. The fruit of this tree is rich in vitamins A, B and C, anthocyanins, flavonoids and phenols. In traditional medicine, the fruit, flowers and leaves of hawthorn are used to strengthen heart valves, reduce blood pressure, improve high cholesterol, help lower blood sugar in diabetic patients and reduce anxiety and sleep disorders. Scientific studies have also shown that the extract of this plant can increase blood flow in the heart arteries and help treat congestive heart failure. This small but meaningful fruit is truly a natural treasure in the heart of the mountains.
Traditional method of harvesting hawthorn:
Jahangir and Shaukat use a traditional method that has been popular among the nomads of the Zagros for thousands of years to harvest these red fruits. They first spread a large mat under the tree, then with a long stick, they gently and carefully tap the branches of the tree to make the ripe fruits fall one by one onto the ground and onto the mat. This method, known as “shaking the tree,” is done gently and skillfully so as not to damage the trunk, branches, or roots of the tree. The nomads believe that this method, unlike modern methods, does not harm the old trees and allows them to continue bearing fruit for years and even centuries. After the fruits have fallen, they collect them from the mat and put them in baskets.
After collecting them, they return home and all sit together to drink freshly brewed tea and relieve the fatigue of this fruitful day. Meanwhile, the rain of divine mercy begins to fall, creating a peaceful and pleasant atmosphere in the heart of the mountains. Then Jahangir and Shaukat work together to take care of the sheep and their pen. On this day, Maryam is also not at home and has gone to the city for medical treatment.
But this is not the end of the story. There are many beautiful and spectacular moments hidden in the heart of this autumn day that you can only discover by watching the entire clip. To see all the stages of harvesting hawthorn from thousand-year-old trees, returning home, drinking tea by the rain, caring for the herd and other pure moments that await you in the rest of the video, watch this clip until the end and witness the heartwarming secrets of nomadic life for yourself and enjoy its beauties.
