We breathe thousands of times every day, yet the lungs contain no muscles capable of actively drawing air into themselves. So what actually makes air enter the lungs?
During inspiration, the diaphragm contracts and descends while the ribs move upward, forward, and outward. This enlarges the thoracic cavity, makes intrapleural pressure more negative, expands the lungs, and briefly lowers alveolar pressure below atmospheric pressure. Air then flows inward along the pressure gradient.
In this episode, we explore:
1. Pump-handle and bucket-handle movements of the ribs
2. The diaphragm acting as a biological piston
3. The pressure gradient that drives airflow
4. C-shaped hyaline cartilage rings supporting the trachea
5. Cartilage plates in the bronchi and smooth muscle in the bronchioles
