The Spirit of Truth and the Spirit of Error

1 John 4:1–6 (The Spirit of Truth and the Spirit of Error) 1 John 4:1–6 is a serious warning that not every spiritual voice comes from God. Scripture tells us not to believe every spirit, but to test the spirits because deception can sound spiritual, convincing, and even religious. The central test is Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit will always lead us toward the truth of who Christ is, what He has done, and what agrees with God’s Word. The spirit of error does the opposite it distorts Christ, resists His truth, and draws the heart away from Him. John also reminds believers that they do not need to fear deception “Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.” — 1 John 4:4, KJV The deeper lesson is spiritual discernment. We should never judge something as true merely because it feels powerful, sounds spiritual, or comes from someone persuasive. Test the voice. Test the message. Test the fruit. Does it agree with Scripture, confess the true Christ, and lead you toward obedience to Him? There are ultimately two opposing influences described in this passage “the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error” (1 John 4:6). The safest place for the believer is not trusting every spiritual impression, but remaining anchored in Christ and His truth.
