In this lesson, we look at the electrophilic addition reactions of alkenes, starting with the general mechanism before looking at the addition of hydrogen and bromine.
We’ll look at how the carbon-carbon double bond acts as a region of high electron density, how electrophiles accept a pair of electrons, and how curly arrows show the movement of electrons during the reaction.
We’ll then see how non-polar hydrogen and bromine molecules become polarised as they approach the double bond, allowing them to take part in electrophilic addition. We’ll also look at the formation of carbocation intermediates and how the addition of bromine explains the colour change in the bromine water test for alkenes.
