🍲 Cooking in the Clouds: Inside the Memba Tribe in Menchuka
What about tea? Have another sip here: • Tea-riffic time in Darjeeling I Golden Tip...
In a high Himalayan valley where clouds drift across the mountains, a meal can tell you everything about a place. Welcome to Menchuka—also spelled Mechuka—in Arunachal Pradesh, where I was welcomed into the kitchen to cook, taste, and learn alongside the Memba community. Would you travel this far for a bowl of thukpa made with stories and care?
In this episode, I explore Menchuka through its food, Buddhist heritage, and everyday hospitality. Surrounded by pine forests, open meadows, and snow-capped peaks near India’s border with China, this remote valley is a place where landscape and culture are deeply connected.
The Memba community is known for its strong Tibetan Buddhist traditions, warmth, and distinctive local cuisine. Cooking with Diggy, I make thukpa and taste the flavours that are part of life here: butter tea, millet wine, fermented cheese, and pa. These are not just dishes or drinks; they are moments of sharing, memory, and welcome.
Along the way, I visit Dorjeeling, Buddha Park, and the monastery, taking in the quiet beauty of Menchuka before returning to the kitchen. You will see why food is one of the most meaningful ways to understand a place—and why the simplest meal, shared in good company, can become the heart of a journey.
For travellers drawn to Arunachal Pradesh, mountain culture, slow travel, and regional food traditions, Menchuka offers more than beautiful views. It offers a chance to listen, taste, and stay present.
