What makes a side character unforgettable — without accidentally letting them take over your entire book?
In this episode of @TheAuthorNextDoor Angela Haas and Cassie Newell break down how to write compelling side characters who deepen your story, strengthen your world, and feel like complete people even when they only appear for a small portion of the book.
They discuss why strong supporting characters should have their own goals, opinions, voices, and priorities instead of existing solely to help the protagonist. At the same time, not every bartender, coworker, neighbor, or best friend needs an elaborate backstory and a three-chapter emotional arc.
The key is knowing the character's purpose.
Angela and Cassie also explore how supporting characters can reflect themes, reveal sides of your protagonist that other characters cannot, create a richer fictional world, and sometimes become interesting enough to earn stories of their own.
In this episode, they discuss:
What makes a side character memorable
Why supporting characters need independent goals and motivations
How side characters reveal different sides of your protagonist
How much development a minor character actually needs
When a side character starts stealing the story
Why distinctive names and voices help prevent characters from blending together
How supporting characters contribute to world-building
Keeping recurring characters consistent across a series
When a side character might deserve their own story
💡 Tip of the Week:
Give every important side character something they want that has nothing to do with your protagonist. They do not need an entire subplot — just enough independent motivation to make them feel like they exist beyond the main character.
💬 Question of the Week:
Who is a side character from a book, movie, or TV show that you remember just as clearly as the main character — and what made them so memorable?
