A box with no engine, no exhaust pipe and nothing inside it that burns. Its maker says it can carry a home or a boat through a blackout in silence, breathing out nothing but water.
This is the UP400 from Estonia's PowerUP Energy Technologies, a 400-watt hydrogen fuel cell generator. Its core idea goes back to William Grove's "gas battery" of 1839 to 1842. We follow the hydrogen from the pressurised cylinder, through the proton exchange membrane and its platinum catalyst, to the wire and the battery module. Then we weigh the numbers against a petrol generator and a lithium battery box, look at why telecom networks, defence buyers and a space agency are interested, and face the hard problems: where the hydrogen comes from, the falling price of batteries, and keeping a fuel-cell membrane alive.
Performance and price figures come from PowerUP's launch materials and the trade press that reported them, so treat them as the maker's best case. None come from an independent long-term field trial.
