How to Drum Scratch Like Qbert (Sort Of) In this tutorial, I break down some of the ideas behind drum scratching and look at how we can take inspiration from DJ Qbert’s approach to build our own techniques and rhythms. We’ll start with simple 1/8th-note drum scratching and build towards more advanced 1/16th-note patterns, adding hi-hats, different scratch techniques and faster tempos along the way. A lot of drum scratching tends to stay around similar tempos and rely almost entirely on kick and snare sounds. In this tutorial, we will look beyond that by using additional drum sounds, experimenting with different tempos and thinking a little more like a drummer. Get the record movement, timing and sample positions clean at slower tempos before trying to push the speed. Once you've got the fundamentals down, start introducing the scratch techniques you already know — transforms, flares and your own combinations — and see where you can take the idea creatively. 1-TO-1 ONLINE DJ LESSONS Want some guidance with your scratching or mixing, or just some direction on what to work on next?
