Chevy 6.6L ECM Replacement & Programming — What They Don’t Tell You

T What should have been a straightforward ECM replacement turned into an absolute GM programming nightmare. In this video, I replace and program the ECM on a 2021 Chevy Express 4500 cutaway with the 6.6L L8T after an injector circuit problem damaged the ECM driver. The programming process definitely did NOT go as planned. The new ECM took the programming, the engine ran great, but the VIN and engine information wouldn’t write correctly. After multiple programming attempts, failed flashes, voltage checks, relearns, and troubleshooting, GM technical support finally had to step in and manually write the VIN. One important thing I learned: after the initial ECM programming, GM had me shut everything down and disconnect battery power for about 10 minutes before continuing with the remaining setup and relearns. That step wasn’t clearly listed in the service information — and I won’t forget it next time.
