The Entire History of Egypt Explained — from the Nile’s earliest communities to modern Egypt. From space, Egypt appears as a narrow strip of light surrounded by desert. For thousands of years, the Nile shaped where people lived, how they farmed, and how rulers connected a long river valley into a kingdom. This video follows Egypt’s story from prehistoric communities and the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt through the pyramid age, the New Kingdom, and the rise of Egypt as a regional empire. It explores periods of political division, foreign rule, and reunification; the Kushite, Persian, Greek, and Roman eras; Cleopatra VII’s struggle to preserve her kingdom; and the changes in language and religion that followed. The story then moves through Fatimid Cairo, Saladin and the Mamluks, the Rosetta Stone and the decipherment of hieroglyphs, Muhammad Ali’s reforms, the Suez Canal, British occupation, and Egypt’s modern revolution. It also looks at the Aswan High Dam: a project that brought electricity and water storage while displacing Nubian communities and changing the Nile’s flow of fertile silt. The final chapter returns to the river. Ethiopia inaugurated the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam on the Blue Nile in September 2025. Ethiopia presents the dam as a major source of electricity and development; Egypt has raised concerns about downstream water security. The dam’s long-term effects depend on how the river is managed and how the Nile Basin countries cooperate. Associated Press coverage of the inauguration Egypt’s history spans many peoples, faiths, languages, and governments. The Nile is the thread connecting them—but it is not the whole story. Historical note: Dates for ancient periods are approximate. The causes of major political changes, including the Old Kingdom’s fragmentation, remain subjects of scholarly discussion.
