Klavierstück IX - Karlheinz Stockhausen (1928-2007) Stockhausen is one of the most influential and well-known composers of the avant-garde movement from the second half of the 20th century. He approached composition from a structural perspective, building his music much like an architect builds a house, from individual notes to large masses of sound. He decided to become a composer after reading Hermann Hesse’s “The Glass Beads Game”, in which a group of rationalist monks invent a game of concept association that evolves to become an art and a form of self expression. I believe one can often find such a game in Stockhausen’s music, dreamlike and surreal in spite of being built on a basis of rationality and intellect. In his “Klavierstücke IX”, the music develops not just on the notes, but in the connection between them, in the way their resonances interact.
