Take the World Out of My Heart | Live Worship | A Prayer of Surrender
“Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” — Proverbs 16:3 (NIV)
How often do we make our plans, choose our direction, build the life we think we want, and then turn to God and ask Him to bless what we’ve already decided?
I’ve been thinking a lot about that question.
Instead of asking God to bless the road I’ve chosen, shouldn’t I be asking Him to lead me down the road He has chosen for me?
The Shepherd leads His sheep. He doesn’t follow them.
That’s really where this song began.
Take the World Out of My Heart is more than a worship song. It’s a prayer from my heart about surrender, humility, and the ongoing work of God in our lives.
Not My Will, but Yours Be Done
In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed:
“Yet not my will, but yours be done.” — Luke 22:42 (NIV)
Think about the depth of that surrender.
Jesus knew the suffering that lay ahead. Yet He willingly submitted Himself to the Father’s will.
Those words have become the central cry of this song:
NOT MY WILL, BUT YOURS BE DONE!
Not my plans. Not my pride. Not my kingdom. Not my glory.
Yours, Lord.
Take the World Out of My Heart
When I pray for God to take the world out of my heart, I’m not asking Him to take away my love for His beautiful creation or the people He’s placed in my life.
I’m asking Him to remove the worldly things that compete for my heart.
The pride. The selfish ambition. The desire to be noticed. The need to be right. The temptation to seek praise for myself rather than point others toward Jesus.
Romans 12:2 reminds us not to conform to the pattern of this world, but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds.
And John 3:30 gives us a beautiful picture of humility:
“He must become greater; I must become less.” (NIV)
That’s the prayer behind this song.
Keep Refining Me, Lord
Malachi 3:3 describes the Lord as a refiner and purifier of silver.
That image has stayed with me.
God isn’t finished with me. Every day there are things in my heart that need to change, attitudes that need correcting, and parts of my life that I still need to surrender.
Psalm 51:10 expresses the prayer so beautifully:
“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” (NIV)
And Isaiah 64:8 reminds us that He is the Potter and we are the clay.
I don’t want to tell the Potter what I should become.
I want to trust His hands.
Even if I become just a little more like Jesus today than I was yesterday, I want to keep growing.
A Song and a Prayer
One of the things I love most about this song is the combination of spoken prayer and powerful congregational worship.
It begins with a quiet conversation with God, rises into a declaration of surrender, and ends where it began—in prayer.
Because ultimately, this isn’t about a performance.
It’s about opening our hearts before our Father.
My prayer is that anyone listening might take a moment to ask:
Lord, am I following You, or am I asking You to follow me?
And perhaps pray these words along with me:
Father, I don’t come before You asking You to bless the life I’ve built. I come asking You to bless me with the life You intended for me.
Take the world out of my heart, Lord.
Make me more like Your Son.
Amen.
