Hegel figured out something unbearable about you: the self you think you built alone was never yours to build. He's also the hardest philosopher in the world to read there's a famous line comparing it to chewing an iron biscuit so here's my one promise. I'm not going to hide behind the jargon the way most explainers do. If Hegel doesn't click for you by the end, that's on me, not on you. And it's worth the effort, because he explains something that happens to you every single day that almost nobody connects back to him. His core idea is this: you cannot become a self in isolation. You don't build an identity privately, inside your own head, and then show it to the world. You become who you are by being recognized by being seen by other people. Recognition isn't a bonus on top of selfhood. It's the mechanism that creates it. Now look at the thing in your hand. A social media profile is that exact human need the need to be seen pulled out of you, industrialized, and handed a number. The like count. The follower count. Two centuries ago Hegel said other people forge your identity. Instagram took that ancient process, put it on a screen, bolted a running public score onto it, and made sure it never turns off. We go all the way through it: what recognition really is, why the self your feed builds optimizes for approval instead of growth, and the one honest counter-argument because for someone who has never been seen anywhere, the feed can be the first place they finally exist. Both are true at once. Which one is happening to you is the real question of this video. One last thing. This whole video is built the way Hegel actually thinks it moves. You'll feel it before I ever explain it.
