In 1945 a Dutch painter was arrested as a traitor — and to save his life, he had to prove he was a criminal.
Han van Meegeren forged Vermeers so perfect that the world's leading expert called one "the masterpiece of Johannes Vermeer." He sold another to Hermann Göring for 1.65 million guilders. When the Allies found it, they charged him with selling a national treasure to the enemy — a capital crime. So he confessed the "Vermeer" was his own fake, and painted a new one under police guard to prove it. But the folk-hero legend hides a truth most channels skip: van Meegeren was himself a Nazi sympathizer.
